The state of Bremen is an important location for the international aerospace industry. With more than 140 companies, 20 scientific institutes. and around 12,000 employees, the aeronautics and space industry in Bremen generates over four billion euros per year. Leading companies, such as Airbus Group, ArianeGroup, Rheinmetall Electronics, OHB, and their suppliers, are playing a key role in this success. The companies’ economic success is founded on their employees excellent qualifications. As a prime location for aeronautics, space and space applications, Bremen brings together business and science within the framework of a unique research infrastructure. Cutting-edge research in Bremen and Bremerhaven consistently drives development and progress forward, particularly in the field of materials sciences, remote sensing, bionics and robotics. The industry association AVIASPACE BREMEN e.V. was founded among companies, colleges, and universities with their numerous institutes, such as the AWI, DFKI, DLR, Fraunhofer, and the Institute for Environmental Physics.

About Bremen Bremerhaven - CITY OF AEROSPACE

The key aerospace industry in the state of Bremen, in accordance with the Bremen State Innovation Strategy 2030, markets itself under the claim Bremen Bremerhaven - CITY OF AEROSPACE. Four organizations in the state of Bremen are jointly implementing the operational goals of the innovation strategy:

  • The Minister for Economic Affairs, Ports and Transformation creates the financial and organizational framework for the design and implementation of the aerospace strategy of the state of Bremen.
  • AVIASPACE BREMEN e.V. manages the network necessary for the implementation of the operational goals of the innovation strategy of the state of Bremen and participation in innovation projects.
  • The BAB - The Development Bank for Bremen and Bremerhaven manages the aerospace research program LuRaFo of the state of Bremen. The BAB's Starthaus supports start-ups and young companies integrating them into the start-up ecosystem of the state of Bremen.
  • The WFB Wirtschaftsförderung Bremen GmbH supports the activities of the Bremen Bremerhaven CITY OF AEROSPACE by organizing trade fairs and events. With BremenInvest, it promotes the internationalization of the industry. The Enterprise Europe Network (EEN) assists companies in their quest for innovation and internationalization.

AVIASPACE BREMEN e.V.

AVIASPACE BREMEN is a network of committed companies and application-oriented research institutes in Bremen and the surrounding area. The network implements the strategy in the field of aerospace of the state of Bremen.
The purpose of the association is to increase cooperation and develop innovative projects in the business and science location. The area of activity is aerospace and other related technologies, in which the members have special skills. AVIASPACE BREMEN mediates between companies, science, and authorities. The main topics are networking, technology transfer, and economic growth by supporting young entrepreneurs and start-ups. This involves the technical and organizational networking of end producers, suppliers or service providers, and scientific institutions in the areas of expertise of material development, high lift, construction, manufacturing technology, earth observation, and robotics.
Of the companies and institutes in Bremen that are active in the aerospace industry, over 50 have already joined AVIASPACE BREMEN e. V.

ESA BIC Northern Germany

The incubation center (BIC) of the European Space Agency (ESA) in northern Germany (ESA BIC Northern Germany) is based together with the Bremen Aerospace Association in the Bremen Innovation and Technology Center BITZ and the Digital Hub Industrie - two of Bremen's largest innovation and technology centers for high-tech companies and start-ups. The ESA BIC Northern Germany brings new start-up impulses to the region and thus strengthens the aerospace innovation cluster of the state of Bremen. AVIASPACE BREMEN supports space incubatees with its network, public relations, and targeted coaching not only during the incubation period but also during the application phase and afterwards as alumni. STARTHAUS Bremen & Bremerhaven is the central contact point in Bremen's start-up ecosystem and supports start-ups on all issues related to business development and financing. ESA BIC Northern Germany is managed by Anwendungszentrum GmbH Oberpfaffenhofen (AZO), an international network and branding company for European space programs.

Since 2021, ESA BIC Northern Germany has also been offering its services to start-ups concerned with aerospace in Schleswig-Holstein. The Lübeck Technology Center with GATEWAY49, AVIA SPACE and AZO jointly operate this extension of ESA BIC Northern Germany. Since 2024, the Innovationport Wismar of Forschungs GmbH Wismar has also been offering access to ESA BIC Northern Germany together with AVIA SPACE and AZO. Further, there are plans to expand the ESA BIC Northern Germany to the northern federal states of Hamburg, Lower Saxony, and Berlin-Brandenburg.

The technical support of the ESA BIC Northern Germany is offered by Fraunhofer IFAM, the German Research Center for Artificial Intelligence DFKI, DLR-RY Institute of Space Systems, Alfred Wegener Institute for Polar Research AWI, and the universities in the state of Bremen including various institutes such as the Institute of Environmental Physics, University of Lübeck, TH Lübeck, Center for Applied Space Technology and Microgravity ZARM, Life Science Nord, Airbus Group, ArianeGroup, AES Aircraft Elektro/Elektronik System, Dräger, DSI Aerospace, Possehl, and OHB.

ECOMAT

The ECOMAT research and technology center is a beacon of cutting-edge technology for climate-neutral flying, lightweight construction, innovative materials, surface technologies, and digitalization of development processes. Around 500 employees from business and science conduct joint and interdisciplinary research under one roof. It is located in the Bremen Airport City, one of the focal points of Northern European aerospace technology.
