Maritime Economy, Ports & Logistics

Bremen and Bremerhaven are among the most important port and logistics locations in Europe. The Bremerhaven container terminal ranks fourth in Northern Europe, and the car terminal is the leader in automobile handling. The ports of the city of Bremen, in turn, have specialized in the handling of conventional general cargo and heavy goods as well as bulk goods. About 1,300 companies secure around 40,000 jobs in the maritime economy & ports sector. In addition to the port economy, numerous companies from the traditional shipbuilding industry, the shipbuilding supplier industry, and maritime research institutes round off the image of a high-performance maritime transport location. They represent the entire maritime value chain and are responsible for around a third of the total gross domestic product of the two-city state.

Logistics centers, such as the multi-award-winning freight transport center GVZ, provide perfect hinterland connections. They form competent support for a modern maritime and logistics location, as do numerous industry activities in the field of digitization, artificial intelligence, and climate-neutral innovations, for example in the field of hydrogen.
